Booking a hearing assessment can feel intimidating if you’ve never had one before.

Many people aren’t sure what the appointment involves or what will happen during the test.
At Caradoc Hearing, we believe hearing care should feel comfortable, clear, and welcoming. Let me walk you through what to expect when you book a hearing assessment at our locally owned hearing clinic in Strathroy.
Booking Your Hearing Assessment
The first step is simply calling the clinic.
When you call Caradoc Hearing, one of our friendly team members will answer the phone. It won’t be a call centre or someone from another city or province — it will be us, right here in Strathroy. Often, the same person who answers your call will be one of the first faces you see when you arrive for your appointment.
During the call, we’ll ask a few basic questions, such as:
Your contact information
Any concerns you’ve noticed with your hearing
Whether you’ve had hearing tests before
This helps us prepare for your visit and ensure we provide the best possible care.
Arriving for Your Appointment

On the day of your appointment, we ask that you arrive about 10 minutes early. This gives you time to complete a short questionnaire about your hearing and medical history.
Once that’s complete, one of our Hearing Instrument Specialists will bring you into the office to begin your appointment.
Before testing begins, we’ll have a conversation about:
Why you booked the appointment
Changes you’ve noticed in your hearing
Situations where hearing feels difficult
What you hope to improve
Hearing care starts with listening.
The Hearing Assessment
The hearing assessment itself takes about 15 minutes and is completely painless.
Step 1: Otoscopy
We begin with otoscopy, which means looking into your ear canal with a small instrument called an otoscope.

This allows us to:
Check the health of your ear canal and eardrum
Identify any wax buildup that could affect your hearing test results
If wax is present and may interfere with testing, we can safely remove it.
Step 2: Pure Tone Testing (The Beep Test)
Next, you’ll sit in the hearing test booth and wear headphones.
You’ll hear a series of soft beeping sounds at different pitches and volumes. Each time you hear a sound, you’ll simply raise your hand or press a button.
This test tells us the softest sounds you can hear at different frequencies, which helps us understand your hearing levels.
Step 3: Speech Testing
Hearing is about more than just detecting sound — it’s about understanding speech.
We complete two types of speech testing:
Word Recognition Testing
You’ll repeat a list of words so we can measure how clearly you hear speech.
Speech in Noise Testing
You’ll hear sentences with increasing background noise and repeat what you hear. This helps us understand how well you hear in environments like restaurants, family gatherings, or community events.
Reviewing Your Results
Once testing is complete, we’ll review your results together.
We’ll explain:
What your hearing test shows
Whether your hearing falls within a healthy range
If hearing support may be beneficial
If hearing aids are recommended, we’ll discuss options that best fit your hearing needs and lifestyle.
Because Caradoc Hearing is an independent hearing clinic in Strathroy, we’re not limited to one manufacturer or corporate sales model. Our recommendations are based entirely on what works best for you.
If your results suggest medical follow-up is needed, we will recommend consulting your physician.
At Caradoc Hearing, we’re proud to serve patients from Strathroy, Strathroy-Caradoc, Mt. Brydges, Komoka, Kilworth, Ilderton, Lucan, Parkhill, Ailsa Craig, Wyoming and surrounding communities.
Let’s start with a conversation.
